Organic Flow Batteries - Ultra low cost energy storage

The transition to renewable energy demands large-scale storage solutions that are safe, sustainable, and cost-effective. Rivus is commercializing a metal-free chemistry for flow batteries that stores renewable power and delivers it reliably when needed.

Rivus' patented organic electrolytes are drop-in compatible with existing vanadium flow battery hardware, enabling the rapid upgrade of today’s flow battery technology to a safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective next generation.

The role of electrolytes

To ensure energy security, we need storage solutions that can flexibly balance supply and demand. Rivus delivers this by replacing today’s heavy metal–based vanadium electrolytes with organic electrolytes. With only this single switch, flow batteries are upgraded to the next generation of safe and cost-effective energy storage.

Why flow batteries?

Flow batteries use liquid electrolytes stored in external tanks, separated from the power-generating cell stack. This design makes them:

  • Flexible: storage capacity scales with tank size.

  • Durable: long cycle life with no degradation from deep charging/discharging.

  • Safe: non-flammable and non-explosive.

Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which typically provide up to 4 hours of storage, flow batteries can deliver 6–24+ hours, making them ideal for balancing intermittent renewable energy.

A metal-free alternative

Most batteries rely on scarce and environmentally harmful metals such as lithium, cobalt, and vanadium, with mining that carries significant environmental and social costs.

Rivus takes a different approach: our electrolytes are made from abundant organic molecules, eliminating the need for scarce metals. This ensures a secure supply chain independent of geopolitically sensitive raw materials, while offering an eco-friendly design that is safer for both people and the planet.
